These cats need to become comfortable in their new home with
their new people. This transition needs to be done slowly and with
patience. (just as with a frightened child), letting the cat lead the way.
Initially , formerly feral cats can seem shy, withdrawn and afraid. It
just takes time and love to help them move through this phase.
They will probably always remain hesitant about interacting with new
people (until they get to know them), and their instincts will most likely
cause them to run at the sight or sound of something unfamiliar (who
wouldn't?), but they will shortly return because their curiosity will get
the better of them. As they grow to be comfortable with you and to trust
you (the length of the transition can be very short or longer than we
would wish), you will experience a very special bond as the formerly
"wild" animal comes to love and trust you and be your best buddy. Helping
a formerly feral cat experience a life of love and care is a wonderful
experience - of human helping animal - and watching that special bond and
trust grow. The love and joy these cats give in return is a great gift to
your life. It takes a special person to nurture a scared being to a place
of trust - the rewards are tremendous.
