Oliver

Born 1997, neutered male, medium hair, black (4764) FIV+

Oliver, Oliver, Oliver.  You'll never come across a sweeter, more loving cat than this strong, handsome man.  When you walk into the room, he immediately runs to greet you with his motor purring full speed ahead.  Oliver would prefer to be an only cat; he will be happiest that way and besides, then he gets all your attention.  Oliver is a very easy going, confident and content cat; nothing seems to phase him.  Oliver seems to like properly behaved dogs; he enjoys sleeping next to his foster Mom’s pit bull!

Considering where Oliver came from, his wonderful attitude and sweet, loving disposition is amazing.  He had a rough life on the streets and somewhere along the way he contracted FIV.  A lady that rescues Schnauzers found him and decided he deserved a better life.    Oliver is looking for a home that will return all the love he has to give.

We consider Oliver a “special needs kitty” because although he is very strong and healthy, he did test positive for FIV, a condition the veterinarian community is understanding more and more about every day. The following summary information about FIV is from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary website: http://www.afa.arlington.ma.us/FIV.html
FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.  FIV is a "slow virus" that affects the cats’ immune system over a period of years.   It is a cat-only virus and cannot be passed to humans or other non-felines such as dogs; it is very species specific.

FIV is also NOT easily passed between cats and, if that does occur, is through a serious, penetrating bite wound; not a frequent occurrence among domestic cats.  FIV can not be spread casually.  Casual includes litter boxes, water and food bowls or snuggling and playing.

As long as cats with FIV are not exposed to diseases that their immune system can't handle, they can live perfectly normal lives.  Since their immune system is gradually weakened, they are more susceptible to infections so should visit a vet at the first sign of illness and should be fed a high-quality diet.  FIV cats most often live long, happy, healthy, normal lives with no symptoms at all.

Oliver is such a love; won’t you let him love you?
